Quarantine Anecdote - 1
Sunday, 29th March 2020.
I happen to be a self-confessed animal lover and I love animals of every kind, dogs and cats obviously included. However, I have heard numerous tales about cats being downright evil. Being in lockdown for nearly a week now, no thanks to the not at all dear Covid-19 pandemic, I saw this with my very own eyes today (I mean the part about cats being evil, of course!)
We happen to have quite a few cats around our house in Mangalore, which me and my parents often feed, and I love playing with. My dearest jealous dog, though, who sadly happens to have a thing against the cute felines, has a field day chasing them daily.
Earlier today evening, I was busy watering the garden, with my trusted doggy assistant by my side, when I saw her attention suddenly shift to the bushes nearby.
Looking in that direction, I spotted a pretty little tomcat, almost hidden in the shrubbery near a young coconut tree, keenly eyeing Munni (that's my dog's name 😎). The cat was perched at the very edge of a deep concrete pit built around the coconut tree, something my dad has got built around all the coconut trees in our compound. This particular tree being young, has a pit quite a bit deeper than the others, which will be filled as the tree grows bigger and taller.
Before I deviate from the topic like I usually do, let me continue my anecdote. As Munni tried her best to make her way through all the shrubbery to get to kitty, the cat seemed pretty confident of himself as he sat at the precarious spot.
It was only when my restless, hyperactive dog nearly reached the spot near the coconut tree that the tomcat finally took off, but not before I almost screamed, thinking Munni was about to fall into the pit. Thankfully my naughty girl was smart enough to put on the brakes right on time, and I heaved a huge sigh of relief, for both doggy and kitty cat.
It was only when the dust settled that a thought suddenly struck me. Did the tomcat sit at the edge of the pit, watching Munni, hoping she would fall in!? 🤔 The more I play the incident in my mind, this seems all the more possible. The fact that those cute furry purring mews can mask devious, scheming minds is well known. And don't get the wrong idea here, I'm saying this in the sweetest way possible. I love cats for their independent, quirky, nonchalant nature. Not to mention their devil may care attitude.
But I just couldn't help wondering, was the tomcat teasing my Munni intentionally, all the while hoping to make her fall into the coconut tree pit? 🤔
Something to wonder about and ponder on, indeed!!
Sidenote: The picture attached is of a different cat in a different location. 😇
